The Wonderful Plan of God?
Have you ever noticed that the health and prosperity message only sells in affluent countries?
Have you ever noticed that the concept so commonly used in American “evangelization” that God has a wonderful plan for your life would seem ridiculous in countries like Iraq, Afganistan, or China, where you may expect to pay for your conversion to Christianity with physical torture or even your very life?
What is the purpose of God setting His love upon His elect? Is it so we can have a happy, fulfilled, purpose-driven life where we can call on God to resolve our every trial and problem?
Titus tells us that Jesus “gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works,” and the Apostle Peter tells us that as Jesus Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, we are to be prepared and ready to do the same – suffer in the flesh so that we should no longer live our lives according to our passions and desires, but to the will of God (1Pe. 4:1-2).
Hopefully these things will encourage us to “commit the keeping of our souls to Him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator” (1Pet. 4:19) and prepare us to seek the grace to suffer for the sake of Christ if need be, rather than to look to avoid such trials.
